Necessity is the mother of invention -after twisting his knee chasing wild cattle around 70 acres of unfenced fields, Michael Midgley decided there had to be a safer, faster and better way- if the farmer can’t catch the cattle, there must be a way to get the cattle to come to the farmer! The first designs were made on the back of an envelope: the rest is history.
The first model made to Michael’s design by Armstrong and Holmes was a system pulled by a Land Rover- this won an award for innovation at the Lincolnshire Show. A popular addition to the hire range, it soon became evident there was also demand for a larger system, pulled by a tractor. Much of the business for both systems has come from word of mouth recommendation and they have succeeded in safely catching and containing cattle when all else has failed. A full UK patent was finally granted in 2013.
From this came requests from farmers and contractors from further field to buy this new equipment to use in their own businesses. The first production machines of the larger tractor-pulled pens, made by Terry Johnson Ltd of Holbeach, have been for sale since 2012, - see ‘Equipment for Sale’. From autumn 2017 a new production version of the original 4x4 pulled mode, manufactured with a new business partner, will be available for sale.
